The Fish Market
The
legendary Hamburg Fishmarket, which has a 300-year tradition, is visited by 70
000 early birds, night owls and tourists every Sunday morning between 5 and 10
o’clock. Famous Market criers noisily praise their wares. Apart from fish and
other seafood, you can get all sorts of vegetable and fruits here as well as
great variety of antiques and even small living animals. The Hamburg fish
market takes place between St. Pauli Hafenstraße and Große Elbstraße directly
at the bank of the river Elbe. You reach the fish market best by bus and train
of the HVV.
The fish market is not only an attraction for guests from whole Germany but also
for our European neighbours.
Another
attraction for tourists and residents of Hamburg certainly is the historical
fish auction hall, which was restored in 1982. At the special location directly
to Elbe and fish market, where 100 years ago fish were landed and put up for
auction, the most different events take place today. Jazz and rock bands play
here every Sunday morning as early as 5 o'clock.

The Hamburg Dom
(fun fair)
From a medieval Christmas Fair to the great fair - an old tradition of the
Hanseatic town - is the "Hamburger Dom". This fun fair takes place three times a year and attracts circa nine
million visitors. The
Dom is the largest fun fair in the north and guarantees fun and thrill.
The Hamburg Dom has its historical roots in the 11th century. Originally traders and craftsmen but also travelling showmen were looking for shelter against winter weather conditions in the former "Marien Dom"
(cathedral) The archbishop was irritated by the worldly activities in his church. He forbade the showmen to enter his cathedral with their wares and
junk. Because churchgoers were in disagreement the archbishop Burchard had to withdraw the
ban. 1337 he gave permission to the tradesmen to use his church for shelter but only during the "Hamburger Schietwetter" meaning only when weather conditions were really
appalling. And so the fair stayed in the cathedral.
When in 1804 the building was demolished, traders and showmen wandered through Hamburg's various districts without a fixed
place. In 1892 during the cholera epidemic they were allocated a permanent place on the "Heiligengeistfeld".
The great fair is to this date known as the Dom after its original location, but the spring
Dom is generally called spring festival, while the "Summer Dom" is known as “Hummelfest”.
Particular attractions are the splendid great fireworks taking place every Friday over the "Heiligengeistfeld" during the
spring-festival.
There is a police station, the so-called “DOM-Wache”, on the Hamburg DOM. This police station is contact point for emergencies.
You can reach the “DOM-Wache” by phone under the number 428 65 1660
