Warehouse-quarter

The "Speicherstadt" (Warehouse-quarter)

The warehouse quarter, under preservation of buildings, which was built between 1881 and 1888 in consequence of Hamburg's connection with the customs union of the German Reich is an extensive continuous complex of warehouses in the free port road access and canals.
The historian buildings are mainly for the storage of imported goods. Here boxes and bales are still lifted to the lofts with old-fashioned winches. The scent of tea, coffee, cocoa, and spices is in the air.
The up to seven stories high buildings are, because of their structure of red brick, cool in summer and warm in winter. Little turrets, gables and oriels are mellowing the rather austere impression these red-brown buildings impart.
Here in the warehouse quarters you find museums like the museum of spices, the customs museum and alternating exhibitions.
Also there are concert and theatre performances taking place, as for instance the old tale of "Jedermann" with Robin Brosch in the main role, in summer as an open-air event. This has been going for many years now.

In the warehouse quarters

In connection with a boat-trip round the harbour you have the opportunity to visit the warehouse quarter. When you enter the free port on your own,  you no longer have to expect customs check, because since January 2003 the warehouse quarters do not belong to the customs territory any longer.

The port and St. Pauli landing stage

Hamburg's port covers an area of 75 square kilometres. Every year 13000 seagoing vessels  arrive and as many inland water barges.
The port was founded on May 7th 1189 and Hamburg's inhabitants with a variety of activities are celebrating this day every year.

St. Pauli landing stage - the Old Elbtunnel

While large pleasure cruise ships, sail boats and navy ships tie up on the "Überseebrücke" (a jetty for ocean going ships), the lighter launches use the "Landungsbrücken", a smaller jetty to start their popular and well-known sightseeing tours around the harbour. Furthermore from here you can board ferries to Finkenwerder, the ship museum at Övelgönne, and Blankenese, and other boats for pleasure trips.
Ludwig Raabe and Otto Wöhlecke built the "Landungsbrücken" complex in the years 1907-09.

One of the most beautiful places for a youth hostel is here

St. Pauli- Elbtunnel The conspicuously dome structure of the St. Pauli Elbtunnel is situated at the west end of the jetties. The old Elbtunnel, which was built between 1907 and 1911 lies 23 meters under the surface of the river and reaches the  shipyard island Steinwerder on the other side after a distance of approximately 450 meters. It is the shortest connection between St. Pauli and the river banks on the other side. Who wishes to go by car can use one of the four car lifts. For pedestrians who don't want to use the staircase there are two other lifts.
This old Elbtunnel is to this day an important means of traffic. It is, without doubt, the fastest connection between the centre city centre and the centre of the Harbour.
