The port and St. Pauli landing stage Hamburg's port covers an area of 75 square
kilometres. Every year 13000 seagoing vessels
arrive and as many inland water barges. St. Pauli landing stage - the Old Elbtunnel
While large pleasure cruise ships, sail boats and navy ships tie up on the "Überseebrücke" (a jetty for ocean going
ships), the lighter launches use the "Landungsbrücken", a smaller jetty to start their popular and well-known sightseeing tours around the
harbour. Furthermore from here you can board ferries to Finkenwerder, the ship museum at
Övelgönne, and Blankenese, and other boats for pleasure trips. One of the most beautiful places for a youth hostel is here St.
Pauli- Elbtunnel The
conspicuously dome structure of the St. Pauli Elbtunnel is situated at the west
end of the jetties. The old
Elbtunnel, which was built
between 1907 and 1911 lies 23 meters under the surface of the river and reaches
the shipyard island Steinwerder on the other side after a distance of
approximately 450 meters. It is the shortest connection between St. Pauli and
the river banks on the other side. Who wishes to go by car can use one of the
four car lifts. For pedestrians who don't want to use the staircase there are
two other lifts.
