The Main Churches of Hamburg

St. Michaelis

The Michel, that is how we fondly call St. Michaelis, the largest baroque church in Northern Germany, is the hanseatic city's landmark - the youngest of Hamburg’s five main churches, stands in the Neustadt (new town).
Today's Michel is the third St. Michaelis Church. After the first Michaelis church, which had been built in the years 1645 to 1666, was completely destroyed by lightning strike, the second St. Michael's was erected according to the plans of John Leonhard Prey and Ernst Georg Sonnin in 1762.
On July 3rd in 1906 church and tower were completely ruined by fire. They were re-erected by the architects Geissler and Faulwasser in the main as Prey and Sonnin had created them. In October 1912 the third St. Michaelis church was inaugurated.

The large interior of the Michel often is the scene of splendid concerts. The nave is ornamented in whit and gold and is producing a festive atmosphere.
In the crypt was put to rest among others Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, son of Johann Sebastian, who was the organist here. You also find an exhibition of the church history in the crypt.
