More about St. Pauli
Obviously St. Pauli is not only characterised by its inhabitants but also by the many tourists and amusement seeking Hamburgers, who crowd this quarter at all times.

Living in St. Pauli ...

It offers many attractions - the river Elbe, the harbour, the fish market, the old "Elbtunnel" and last but not least, the Reeperbahn known the world over as the "Sündige Meile".
The 600m long Reeperbahn owes its name to the rope makers, who in the old days here manufactured their ropes mainly for the seagoing vessels. (Low German - Reep for rope)
But the "Kiez" offers more, i.e. for theatre funs the over 150 years old St. Pauli Theater, Schmidts Theater, the light Opera House as musical stage and much more, The Schmidt Tivoli offers cabaret performances.

Also for the younger generation opportunity for entertainment are manifold. In the 1980's Hamburg's youth have rediscovered music clubs and pubs on the "Kiez". At the live music club "Große Freiheit 36" which upholds the tradition of the Beatles (they began their career in the 1960's at the Star Club) you can listen to rock concerts and there are, of course, many discos. There are also numerous bars and scene pubs and new ones sprout like mushrooms.

St. Pauli today - it also means its soccer club "F.C. St. Pauli" as well as the "Davidwache" beside the Reeperbahn.
The architects Schuhmacher, Ebeling and Noakes built the “Davidwache”, Germany's best-known police station at Spielbudenplatz in 1913-1914, well fitting in the arrangements of the surroundings of bourgeoisie houses.
The police station, which is responsible for St. Pauli, owes its name to the location at the “Spielbudenplatz / Davidstraße”. The area with its over 450 pubs, restaurants and brothels is one of the hardest of the world.

The Davidwache changed as the last Hamburg police station to a police commissioner's department on April 4th, 2005. However, the new PK 15 still carries the name "Davidwache" like for 35 years officially.
