Statistics

The City:

The "Freie und Hansestadt Hamburg" is with 1 700 089 inhabitants and a total area of 755 sq km the largest city in Germany after Berlin. At the same time it is one of the states of the Federal Republic of Germany, called "Bundesländer". The city is located in the North German plain in the lower reaches of the Elbe about 100 km from the confluence of the river into the North Sea.

Hamburg is a green city.12% of the city surface is covered with parks, recreation areas and woods. A further 8%of the city is covered with lakes, rivers and other water areas which contributes to the recreational value.
46 square kilometres are national park areas, a further 170 square kilometres are nature reserve areas. The city's streets are lined by a total of ca 215000 trees.

To the capital region of Hamburg counts Hamburg itselves and another 14 areas of territory too. These are districts north of the river Elbe, which belong to Schleswig Holstein as well as in the south administrative districts belonging to Lower Saxony.

Parliament and government:
The city state parliament is known as "Die Bürgerschaft". The state government is the senate. Next to the Lord Major and the second Major another ten senators belong to the senate. 

The landmark of our town, the Michaelis Church, called Michel, has a tower height of 132 m.

97 consulates general and consulates have their seat in Hamburg. Therefore Hamburg is one of the cities with the greatest number of consulates in the world. 

Hamburg maintains town partnerships with St Petersburg, Marseilles, Shanghai, Dresden, Leon, Osaka and Chicago.

Traffic:
U- and suburban trains operate under the
Hamburg Transport Authority (HVV) a length of 298 km track network and 1850 km bus network.

There are 2465 bridges in Hamburg, these are more than Venice has.

The town has an international airport and of course our port, which is one of the most important container ports of the world.

Culture:
Hamburg has a State Opera and two state theatres, furthermore about 30 private theatres and 82 movies.

There is a planetarium and seven municipal museums, in addition another 40 public and private museums.

The foundation "Hamburg public library" maintains 41 district libraries, 3 driving libraries as well as 5 special libraries.
The media stock contains almost 1.8 million books, cassettes, videos, notes and games.
The number of lending is 9.4 million p.a.

Sports:
For the sports leisure time, Hamburg offers 248 sport fields, 661 gymnastics and sports halls and also 26 recreational, regional, combination indoor/outdoor and outdoor swimming pools of "Bäderland Hamburg GmbH"

Media:
Hamburg is a leading centre of the German media industry. 12980 companies belong to this economic sector in Hamburg. These include 8320 advertising firms, 2043 publishing companies, 1216 film and motion picture companies, 933 music recording companies as well as 384 culturally involved enterprises, 84 radio and TV broadcasting and 40 telecommunications companies.
The media sector has been the most expansionist economic sector within the last few years.
Hamburg-based publications have a share of over 50% of the newspaper and magazine edition sold in Germany altogether.
18 of 20 largest-selling magazines in Germany are published in Hamburg.

Markets:
Apart from the central market for fruit and vegetables and the flower central market the "Hamburger Dom", takes place on the "Heiligengeistfeld" three times a year.
These public festivals have fair character.
80 weekly markets among them the traditional "fish market" in Hamburg-Altona, contribute to the abundant supply of fresh foods and basic commodities available throughout Hamburg.
